Washington State Hospital Report Card, 2009

Washington State Honor Roll for Inpatient Procedures and Conditions

1. What is the Honor Roll?

The Honor Roll consists of hospitals who have treated at least thirty cases, and whose risk-adjusted mortality rate is statistically significantly lower than the state average mortality rate using a 95% confidence interval on a given indicator. The list is sorted by region, indicator, and city, respectively. Essentially, the same information can be obtained by viewing the TABLES and GRAPHS from the main entry page and noting the hospitals with three stars. Indicators for which no hospitals made the honor roll are not displayed.

2. What does "risk-adjustment" and "95% confidence interval" mean?

These terms are described in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. More information also can be obtained in our Interpreting Tables and Interpreting Graphs pages.

3. Why are volume and utilization indicators excluded from the Honor Roll?

Hospitals which make the honor roll are the same hospitals which obtained three stars in a given mortality indicator on the GRAPHS. Due to the fact that there is no correct way to gauge volume or utilization levels as better or worse, we can only include mortality indicators simply because we know that a lower mortality rate is definately better.
